Part I: Trauma
Module 1: PTSD — The View from Research
Dr. John Gottman reviews the DSM-5 symptom criteria for Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Dr. Julie Gottman presents the underlying assumptions for why couples therapy is crucial to treatment.
Module 2: How PTSD Affects a Relationship
Dr. Julie Gottman describes the effects of PTSD on individuals. She overlays the Sound Relationship House theory to demonstrate how PTSD affects the non-PTSD partner and the relationship.
Module 3: Assessment for Couples With PTSD
Dr. Julie Gottman presents an overview of couples therapy for PTSD, including the therapist’s stance. She describes the assessment process for treating couples where one or both partners have PTSD.
Module 4: Intervention for Couples with PTSD
Dr. Julie Gottman introduces a protocol for working with PTSD during couples therapy. She presents examples during in-session films with a couple experiencing PTSD.
Module 5: Gottman Method Interventions Where PTSD May Appear
Dr. Julie Gottman discusses friendship building interventions that can be used and modified for use with couples experiencing PTSD. She shares an in-session film demonstrating ways couples can support each other while PTSD is explored.

Module 1: About Infidelity
Dr. John Gottman provides a definition for “affairs,” introduces research and facts about affairs, and describes current therapies used to treat affair couples. He identifies and describes the 3 phases of love and explains the metrics involved in measuring couple interactions.
Module 2: Our Therapy for Affair Couples, Overview of The Three Phases & Assessment, Session 1
Dr. John Gottman provides an overview of the 3-step process for using Gottman Method Couples Therapy to treat couples who have experienced an affair. Dr. Julie Gottman describes how to conduct the initial assessment with affair couples.
Module 3: Assessment, Sessions 2 & 3
Dr. Julie Gottman describes how to conduct individual sessions with both partners, including how to handle it when the affair partner is not willing to stop the affair, or does not want to reveal it to the other partner.
Module 4: Phase 1: Atone
Dr. John Gottman explains the purpose and process of the Atonement phase of therapy. He shares an in-session film with Mike and Marilyn working through the Atonement phase.
Module 5: Phase 2: Attune Goals 1 & 2
Dr. Julie Gottman introduces the Attunement phase of therapy for affair couples. She describes the tools used to help couples express needs, connect emotionally in a calm manner, manage conflict, and reach compromise.
Module 6: Phase 2: Attune Goal 2 (continued)

John M. Gottman, PhD
World-renowned for his work on marital stability and divorce prediction, John Gottman has conducted more than 40 years of breakthrough research with thousands of couples. Dr. Gottman was voted one of the Top 10 Most Influential Therapists of the past quarter-century by the Psychotherapy Networker. He is the author or co-author of over 200 published academic articles and more than 40 books. He is Professor Emeritus of Psychology at the University of Washington, where he founded “The Love Lab” where much of his research on couples’ interactions was conducted.
Julie Gottman, PhD
A highly respected clinical psychologist, she is sought internationally by media and organizations as an expert advisor on marriage, sexual harassment and rape, domestic violence, gay and lesbian adoption, same-sex marriage, and parenting issues. She is the co-creator of the immensely popular The Art and Science of Love weekend workshops for couples, and she also co-designed the national clinical training program in Gottman Method Couples Therapy.
William Bumberry, PhD
William Bumberry is a licensed clinical psychologist with more than 25 years of experience working with couples. He has been with the Gottman Institute for nearly two decades. In addition to being a Certified Gottman Therapist, he is also one of the Institute’s most senior trainers, leading Gottman workshops for professionals throughout the United States and internationally.
Vagdevi Meunier, PsyD
Vagdevi is a licensed clinical psychologist who has dedicated her professional career to helping couples learn how to have healthy fulfilling relationships that last. She brings a wealth of personal and professional training and experiences to provide individual and couples therapy, couples groups and workshops, and consultation, supervision, and training for professionals.
